Obsessed

My family and I just went to see this movie the other night, and holy cow was it terrifying! Obsession is a movie in an ever-growing line of films to be produced and directed by a YouTuber. This trend of new ideas and alternate pathways of putting one's creativity out into the world is refreshing, in my opinion. Not to mention, it is a nice change of pace to see something entirely new rather than the same regurgitated ideas we see over and over again.

Obsession follows Bear, who is infatuated with his coworker Nikki, but likely suspects that the attraction is not mutual. Bear just can't seem to get over his nerves enough to ask the question he may suspect he will not like the answer to, which is whether his crush is unrequited or not. Looking to impress Nikki, Bear finds himself at a witchy little store looking for a crystal necklace for her because she recently lost her own. Not finding what he thinks Nikki would like, he happens to come across a novelty item that he finds intriguing. Enter the One Wish Willow. Bear buys the wish toy as a joke to possibly give to his friend. But when he drops Nikki off after a night out and once again loses his nerve in asking her out, Bear uses the toy for himself. He wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone in the world, and breaks the willow branch that comes in the One Wish Willow box.

What happens from that point on is seriously scary. Nikki, brilliantly played by Inde Navarrette, becomes increasingly obsessed with Bear, but not in a cute way. It was so eerie to watch how well the movie depicted a woman losing her autonomy, very much against her will. It left us shaken afterward, and our nerves were a bit jumpy after all the well-placed jump scares within this creepy tale.

If you love a good horror flick and don't mind being a bit weirded out for days after, get your tickets now! I will watch this one again to find all the little things I might have missed the first time through due to covering my face with my hands in anticipation of what 'Nikki' would do next. It is a great film and truly original. But, true to keeping with reality, this one doesn't end pretty. Be prepared to be disturbed by the time it's over! But being pleasantly surprised by the movie's originality makes it all worth it for me!
