Over the weekend, my family and I watched this movie, which is now available to purchase and watch from home. I have been waiting for this one, and it didn't disappoint! If you haven't seen the trailer, the premise is this: Louise and Ben Dalton meet Paddy and Clara while on vacation. They all end up hitting it off so well that the Daltons and their young daughter, Agnes, agree to come to Paddy and Clara's home in a remote area of Europe for another get-together and to let Agnes continue bonding with their mute son, Ant. Obviously, that is when shit goes sideways.
Initially, I was concerned that the movie would not justify the mental leap required for a seemingly rational couple to agree to visit relative strangers at their secluded dwelling, but it did. Paddy and Clara were very convincing as the fun and carefree counterparts to the uptight Dalton family. James McAvoy's performance was one that I will never forget and has now put him at the top of my list of actors whose movies I won't want to miss!
What I really loved about the movie, though, was the messages spread throughout the story about parenting and the fear that inherently comes with it. I'm not sure that message was entirely intended, but it was something I felt came through throughout the movie. I also liked that the plot didn't spell everything out for the viewer; some things were just inferred, and that made it all the more creepy. In my opinion, the ending should leave most people, parents or otherwise, shaken. I would highly recommend this film and would love to hear what others think about it!
