Bag of Bones remains one of my all time favorite stand alone novels by Stephen King. The story deals with grief and love and, of course, ghosts! Mike Noonan is the main character in the book, he is a man dealing with the sudden death of his wife. Circumstances find Mike returning to a lakeside summerhouse that he calls "Sara Laughs". It is here in western Maine that Mike meets Mattie and Kyra and his next love story begins.

This novel deals with powerful themes of grief and hope, but the underlying ghost story is ultimately what stuck with me years after reading it.

The town in which "Sara Laughs" is located is plagued with terror and mystery. Not to give too much away, but the town has a powerful supernatural presence and it's not happy.

When you get to the end of the novel and realize all the ways in which the master of storytelling has woven his symbolism around the complicated mess that is grief I think you'll agree that this is King at his finest.

Bonus! This book was actually made into a T.V. movie years ago. While I enjoyed the book more than the movie, it's still fun to watch a show that follows one of your favorite reads pretty consistently. I highly reccommend this one for King fans, and maybe even non fans, alike as it isn't really like his more popular books!
