Alice Feeney never really disappoints, but this one was one of my favorites from her.
Grady and Abby seem to have a happy marriage. Grady is a successful author, and his wife Abby excels in her own career. But the night that Grady finally receives the news that his latest novel has become a best seller, his wife has an issue getting home to celebrate with him. While talking to Grady on the phone, Abby had to slam on her brakes because of an odd figure lying in the road. She gets out to investigate, and that's the last the Grady hears from her.
A year later, a distraught and depressed Grady travels to a small Scottish island at his agent's request to refocus, reenergize, and return to his career as a celebrated author. But all isn't what it seems on this small slice of paradise, and Grady begins to feel like he's either finally losing his grip on reality or something more sinister has got its hooks in his fragile mind, and he may not survive the outcome.
This book was so full of mystery and intrigue. I am usually pretty good at figuring out the twist, at least by three-quarters of the way through reading. But this one had me stumped until the very end. And it was well worth it! You may feel like you just found the biggest plot hole in the world towards the end, only to have all the puzzle pieces click into place and a lightbulb go off in your brain. "Ohhhhhh, now I get it," was my exact statement at the end.
I won't give away any spoilers, but if you love mysteries with beautiful scenery and maybe a bit of unreliable narration, you'll LOVE this book. It's ugly, but oh so beautiful at the same time!
