Books will be the MAIN topic for this blog, but I wanted to mix it up and briefly discuss some of my favorite horror flicks for spooky season! The three I chose are all very different and I enjoyed them for that uniqueness. So, let's dig in!
First up is one of my all time favorite slasher flicks, Scream. I mean the original one from the 90's, but I do happen to like all of them. This one in particular is one of my faves because it broke the mold so to speak on the slasher flick genre. Up to the point of it's release, this genre had been pretty much the same across the board. Teenagers find themselves somehow in the midst of an attack from a super killer. Que Jason, Freddy, and Michael. Then Scream came along and shattered that mold, reshaping it into an entirely new creation. I still remember seeing this movie for the first time and absolutely loving it! Alongside not being able to figure it out, the whole plot just felt different to me. Gone was the super villain that was somehow unable to be killed and a new formula took shape. The killers were now right in front of you, hiding in plain sight! Seriously, if you have somehow missed this one, it's time to check it out!
Next is a newer film (anything that was created in the 2000's seems new to me fyi) called Cabin in the Woods. This one remains one of my favorites. It's gory and messy and best of all very clever and actually funny in many parts. It's the best mash up of terrifying alongside a story-line that is quite literally one of the craziest one's I've seen. Just in case you haven't caught this one, I won't give anything away but it is not too far into the film before you have to rethink everything that you likely thought the movie was going to be. Young friends heading to a remote cabin sounds like your classic horror blueprint, but just wait, nothing is as it seems! It's actually worse.
Last but certainly not least is a movie that will stick in your head for days and days after watching it. Seven was one of the most disturbing movies I had watched within the time frame in which it was released, which was 1995. This one remains one of my favorites because the acting was incredible and the story-line was very unique and very chilling. Fun fact, Seven was one of the first movies to actually spice up the intro credits. Gone was the ominous music and boring list of names, Seven interspersed the opening credits with a creepy soundtrack alongside unsettling images. I loved the use of the seven deadly sins in what is ultimately the killers excuse to harm others. And the ending is something that will forever be burned into your brain. What's in the box??? I won't say, but again if you have missed this older gem, it's time to find it and give yourself a fright!
All of these movies have an R rating and have content that should be evaluated for triggers and appropriate age ranges before enjoying them......if you dare!
Please comment some of your favorite scary season flicks. I honestly feel like I have seen them all, horror movies and scary stories are a household favorite here. But maybe you can recommend a good one I have missed!
